Welcome to the Dollism Plus USA series of articles! In the next couple of days, I will be blogging about this wonderful bjd convention, which has arrived in the United States for the first time since it was launched in 2006. Dollism Plus USA, hosted by Den of Angels, DollHeart and Mint on Card, was held on September 19-21, 2014 in Buffalo, New York, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
What makes this convention extra special is that it’s also a celebration of Den of Angels’ 10th anniversary. I’ve been a member of Den of Angels since its humble beginnings as a Yahoo group over a decade ago, and I am extra excited to celebrate this huge milestone in our forum’s history. I look forward to sharing my experience with you!
This first article will focus on all the gorgeous contest entries that were displayed on Saturday, September 21 at the vendor hall. There were so many beautiful and unique entries! I am always humbled and amazed at the BJD community’s talent, skill, creativity and artistry.
The theme for both costuming contests was “Fancy Fandom Masquerade”. Participants were instructed to create a formal or a semi-formal garment for a doll of their choice. Each outfit had to include a matching mask.
Garments for this contest had to be made from scratch, shoes excluding.
First Place winner! Everything about this entry was absolutely perfect. I cannot imagine how many hours it took to create such an intricate and detailed ensemble!
Second Place winner! This rich red gown was based on the song “The Rains of Castamere” from the TV show “Game of Thrones”. I loved the shade of red used for this outfit!
Third Place winner! My favorite parts about this entry are the design of the dress and the intricate mask. The addition of the checker pattern is also very appealing!
Fourth place winner! Submission number four was displayed on the biggest doll participating in the costuming contests! I loved the rich purple color used, as well as the gorgeous headdress.
Submission 5: I enjoyed the dark theme of this entry and the addition of the raven at the apex of the ensemble. I am very impressed with how much work went into creating the wing portion of the outfit!
Submission 12: What a cute little witch! The red bow and shoes work very well with the purple gown. And, the purple-eared kitty is an adorable addition!
Submission 15: A very pretty wizard concept! I like the variety of fabrics used for this one. The little sparkles on the skirt were a very nice touch.
Submission 20: The color of this gown was very beautiful – a nice silvery grey, almost icy! I especially liked the unicorn-themed mask.
Submission 26: Such a unique entry! I absolutely love the monkey mask, it is so detailed and realistic. The design of the dress is gorgeous as well – a classic masquerade ensemble!
Submission 30: The colors used for this dress complement each other very well. Blue was a great choice for the shell of the dress!
Submission 32: This is such a classic dress style – very elegant! The hat and veil add a mysterious touch to the outfit. I particularly liked the fabric used for the dress; both color and pattern are very beautiful.
Submission 36: My favorite part about this submission is how well the wig complements the very regal ensemble. I wonder how long it took to put the wig together? It is gorgeous!
Submission 41: The bright, bold colors used for this submission really stood out from the crowd! The understated headdress and jewelry are a great addition to the ensemble.
Submission 44: The lacy design of the neckline was my favorite part of this outfit. The purple sheer fabric at the bottom of the dress added a lovely touch! The creator, Samantha, let me know that the mask and shoes/feet were hand-sculpted from wax and hand-cast in resin. Very impressive!
Submission 49: The mask for this entry was unlike any other – very unique, indeed! I wonder what was the inspiration behind this creation?
Because this article is very image heavy, it is split into three pages. Continue onto the second page for Readymade and Extreme Modification contest entries!
